Race to the Top: Stacks on Deck

Some education analysts are questioning how much Arne Duncan can do on education reform with "only" $5 billion to spend over the next two years.

But a new analysis by Democrats for Education Reform shows that in this year alone, Duncan’s $2.5 billion dwarfs the combined $500 million investments of the "big three" education reform venture philanthropists (Gates, Broad, and Walton).
Both critics and supporters of federal intervention in education policy, both NCLB skeptics and sympathists, agree that the feds have changed the focus and operation of U.S. schools over the last seven years. But Duncan’s $5 billion is more than one-third of what Title I was just three months ago and more than half of what Title I was when NCLB was signed into law.

In our opinion, the potential is huge.  And the devil, as they say, will be in the details.
